Sammy laughed. It was very cute how the ball flew out of the court like that. She went to pick up the ball and then brought it back.
"Ya know, you're a nice guy! But you could maybe improve your volleyball skills." Sammy chuckled.

Riley walked out onto the beach and saw two people playing volleyball. One was a familiar face, Gary Hammelman. The other was a good-looking blonde haired girl. She came here to relax during the stressful days that Chris was in the hospital. Gary always made her feel good, so maybe he could help her relax. She walked over to them.
"Hey Gary!" she said, teasingly winking at him.
She turned to the girl.
"Hi I'm Riley," she said with a smile.

Gary blushed at Sammy's comment, but he smiled. And it was a real smile. But, suddenly he heard a voice that made his heart break.
He turned around on his heel and saw Riley standing behind him.
"Oh, hi.Um, what's up?"
He turned back to Sammy.
"Alright, let's see if I can do any better this time!" He said jokingly.

Riley wasn't happy when he ignored her. Was she... jealous? Without anything to do with Chris?
"I came here to relax and then I saw you here... I've missed seeing you."she said.
What she didn't realize was that she wasn't jealous. Chris wanted Rori over her. And now Gary was picking someone else too.

Gary heard Riley's voice again. It was starting to annoy him, but he couldn't be mean.
"Oh, that's cool. I'm kind of hanging with someone, though."
What was she doing, trying to ruin him completely? Does she think she didn't hurt him enough when she rejected him, now she wans to embarass him in front of another girl.

Riley was so confused. She felt like she should try to have something with Gary. She didn't think Chris would love her especially after she almost killed him. He broke her heart... but she loved him. She decided to just try something.
"Don't move" she told Gary.
At this moment, she did something she never even imagined with anyone but Chris.
She kissed Gary.

Riley told him not to move.
Suddenly, he felt soft, smooth lips touch his. Riley was kissing him. Right in front of Sammy. Quickly, he pushed her away.
"Please, don't tease me. You said no, and I thought that meant you weren't in to me like that."
Gary couldn't believe that he just did that, because truthfully, he wanted to continue kissing her. But he felt something more for the girl on the opposite side of the net.

Sammy was in shock. Though technically Gary and her weren't official yet so she didn't know what to do but to just stare. She really thought she had something with him. She was thankful he pushed away. He must've saw something in her as well.

"But... you said you love me..." she said. No guy had ever told her that before. It made her feel good.
"I'm sorry... another great guy's life ruined thanks to me..." she said, fighting back tears. She wanted to just breakdown and cry. She wanted him to comfort her. But not because of anything she just said. Because she almost killed someone who she loved more than anything in the entire world.

Gary looked at Sammy, and suddenly, something just clicked. He walked over to the other side of the net and just smiled at her, not knowing what to do.

Riley left and walked over to a part of the beach where no one was, fairly close by and sat down. She looked over the orange ocean lit by the sunset and silently cried. She felt like throwing up. She looked over at Gary and the girl.
She thought an array of questions.
'Why doesn't anyone love ME?'
'Why am I so crazy...'
'Why can't I just be a normal teenager...'
Almost as a response, her consience told her:
'Because you are in love with Chris'
Everything finally seemed so clear.
She looked back over at Gary and the girl. She was happy for Gary, and she no longer felt the ping of jealousy. She would give whatever love and strength she had left to the one who she truly wanted and who needed it.

Gary couldn't help but feel sorry for Riley, sitting alone on the beach. He just loved Sammy more. He thought loong and hard about what Riley just did to Gary...

Riley decided to stop feeling sorry for herself. Crying wasn't going to help now. She made her bed and she had to lay in it.
She went over to Gary.
"I'm sorry," she said
She gave him a warm, friendly hug.
"I'm just really confused with everything that's going on..." she said.
She couldn't stop herself from crying. But she wasn't feeling sorry for herself. She was overwhelmed at everything life had thrown, and she was exhausted, and she hated Chris being hurt.

Riley suddenly walked over to Gary and gave him a friendly hug.
"Don't be sorry. I'm the one that should apologize. I took it to fast, and I realize that you aren't the one. No offense. But, I know for a fact that you are one of the greatest friends I have ever had. And everything will be ok. Don't worry." Gary meant everything he said.

"Even if it is okay... Chris got hurt because of me. How can I live with myself?" she said.
Trying to get the images of that dark night out of her mind, she changed the subject.
"Who is your... um... girlfriend?" she asked. She didn't know why she called her that, it was just a vibe she could feel.
